Who is God?

Character of God

God exists in a Trinity of three eternal and co-equal persons. Within the nature of God are three eternal persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

"Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades." Revelation 1:17-18

God reveals himself to us in His inspired Word, the Bible, and through the incarnation, when God became a man and lived among us.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. John 1:1-5

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16

God has given us the Scriptures for one purpose: to reveal His nature and character to us. In the book of Genesis, we read about God's creation and about God's judgment. In Isaiah we read about His holiness and His redemptive love. The book of Hosea tells us about God's overwhelming compassion and love for mankind. In Jonah we see God's universal love for mankind and His desire to bring mankind to a relationship with Him. In the book of Micah we read of God's justice. In the book of John, we learn that God loved us so much that He sent His only begotten Son to die for us, to redeem us from the curse of sin. All throughout the Scriptures God reveals to us who He is and how we can know him.

God is Spirit

God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. John 4:24

"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven." Matthew 16:15-17

Then the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form; there was only a voice. Deuteronomy 4:12

God is Living

No one is like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power. Who should not revere you, O King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you. Jeremiah 10:6-7

But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. Jeremiah 10:10

God is Self-Existent (has always eternally existed)

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Revelation 1:8

"I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God." Isaiah 44:6

God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'" Exodus 3:14

God is Immutable (God does not change)

I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him. Ecclesiastes 3:14

"I the LORD do not change." Malachi 3:6

God is Omnipotent (God is all powerful)

"I am God Almighty; walk before me" Genesis 17:1

"with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26

"Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns." Revelation 19:6

"KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." Revelation 19:16

God is Omnipresent (God is everywhere at once)

You hem me in-- behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.
Psalm 139:5-18

God is Transcendent (detached from all creation)

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or instructed him as his counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way. Who was it that taught him knowledge or showed him the path of understanding? Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust. Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires, nor its animals enough for burnt offerings. Before him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing. Isaiah 40:12-17

God is Sovereign (supreme authority)

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.
1 Chronicles 29:11-13

"I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know there is none besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no other." Isaiah 45:5-6

God is Holy

And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." Isaiah 6:3

Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: "Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy." Leviticus 19:2

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." 1 Peter 1:15-16

God is Love

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Psalm 51:1

But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children.
Psalm 103:17

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. I John 4:9-10

God is Truth

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100:5

He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
Deuteronomy 32:4

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:31-32

Heavenly Father, thank you Lord for teaching us who you are through your Holy Word. You are the King of kings and Lord of lords. We honor you, we praise you, we worship you Lord. To you be all the glory. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!
